A single storey extension is built onto a portion of the home with one or more of the sides of the extension attached to the existing property and only the ground floor and possible basement built into it.

A building control inspector is required for single storey extensions. Your building project may be a permitted development which means you may not need to apply for planning permission from your local council.

Not all our extensions have required planning permission. More often than not a house extension can be carried out under permitted development so long as it fits the criteria. You can contact us for more information or see the Essex County Council planning here.

A single story rear extension is not permitted to extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres on an attached house and four metres on a detached house.

The maximum height of single storey extensions is four metres.

An extension of more than one floor is not permitted to extend beyond the original rear wall of the property by more than three metres.

If you need full planning permission rather than permitted development for a house extension and more space in London, there will be an application fee you must pay and costs for the plans to be made. An architect or a building company like us can provide the plans.

Actual costs vary starting with alterations and extensions made to a single story dwelling house, and increasing from there, which all depends on the size of the property extension.

Once you have permission to build work can start on the house extension by our exceptional team of builders in Essex.

Getting permission for a house extension when you need it can be a stressful time. But getting permission from planners should be around eight weeks for a decision on whether it can go ahead.

With a large or complex application it can take as long as sixteen weeks, especially if an environmental impact assessment is carried out so, please be prepared for the wait.
